Rubbermaid Weapon Racks!
I've never kept a diary when I was young and I guess old habits die hard. I've been very bad about blogging the happenings that go on around me. I'm currently out in Austin, TX staying with my kung fu cousin Graham. He found this handy dandy stand at the department store the other day. It's a modern day weapon rack.

Pretty friggin awesome if you ask me.
Well today I spent a good 3 hours learning from Sifu Hughes about all the good stuff he's teaching at the school and participated in 4 of his classes. Tomorrow, I'll be teaching some bells with Sifu Leverett getting him ready for his RKC Certification.
I'll update with more things when I get back home.

Back to training!
You would think by instructing full time at a martial arts academy, it would be fairly easy to stay in pretty good shape. Well it is definitely harder than it seems. With taking care of marketing, accounting, curriculums and other things, I do find it hard to consistently train my forms, cardio and flexibility. Well as of today, I'm rededicating myself to a consistent training regime. I've been learning a lot over the last few years but having really drilled anything into my muscle memory. So my training will consist of reviewing my 7-star mantis sets, kettlebells and running.
Along with the physical aspects of my training, I'll be doing a little self educating on the human anatomy. This is going to prepare myself for the next phase of my training and career. I've come to the realization that I am a martial arts and health professional. People pay me for my knowledge and understanding on kung fu and kettlebell strength training. I need to make sure I train my students to the best of my knowledge and ability.
The next hundred days will kick start my dedication to my health and fitness goals!
Next time it will be the 32kg

Happy Valentine's Day
A very uneventful Valentine's Day turned very eventful as the day progressed. I was expecting at least a couple or two at my Valentine's Day 2 for 1 session but the expectation of rain may have scared off the crowd this weekend. Didn't matter, this finally gave Debbie and I a change to train on our own. Started with some ladder two handed swings (you go I go style), clean and press making sure to clean the bell after every rep and finished up with some good ol' goblet squats! After our quick KB session, we loaded up the bells and went back to the kung fu school.
Taught for about 1.5 hours on some CSC basics. Warming up with power yoga postures and the sha ba form working both sides of the throw. Besides seeing my students eyes light up when they were able to relate these throws with their own 7 star training, this wasn't the highlight of the day.
I had planned a little suprise for Debbie which involved sushi, a barbershop quartet, Dr Mark and Courtney Chang, and a shiney little object. Yes ladies and gentlemen, I took the plunge and I guess officially retired from bachelorhood.

2009 San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade
This is probably the busiest Chinatown parade I've been to. The weather turned out to be wonderful this weekend and the streets were packed full of people coming to watch the parade. Usually there are some dead spots because the rain scares away most people but it was lined from start to finish this year. What did that mean for us? Well the dragons didn't get to rest much that night. Here's a clip of our performance.

Training with Kenneth Jay
Kenneth Jay was recently out in Southern California and Doc Cheng decided to bring him over for an informative kettlebell session with the Dane of Pain himself. All I have to say is THANK YOU to the both of you for the opportunity to learn from a couple of household names when it comes to safe and proper body mechanics and hardstyle kettlebell training.
If I had known that I would be so involved with kettlebells and martial arts during my young adult life, I may have taken up a health science major in school. It may happen in the near future...who knows.
Hopefully this weekend stays dry otherwise kettlebell classes will be cancelled during Valentine's Day.
As I started to say to many of my new victims to kettlebells over the last few days....it only hurts the first time!

Never Enough Training
Who needs safety mats when there's snow everywhere! Debbie and I decided to work our sha ba a little bit during our trip to Mammoth. It stormed all weekend and we found a perfect piece of sidewalk to have a little street fighting sessions. Oh ya...the slopes were good too!

Camp Pendleton goes RKC!
Never in my life would I have ever imagined having the opportunity to work side by side with the world's finest in fitness and strength training. I also never would have thought I would be sharing my knowledge to benefit the USMC and aiding them in the benefits of Russian Kettlebell training.
Well this past week, I did just that. The 1st Anglico company participated in the Russian Kettlebell Challenge directly from the RKC Chief Instructor - Pavel Tsatsouline. Thanks to my friend & mentor "Doc" Mark Cheng, I stood beside the RKC's finest to assist these devil dogs in their kettlebell experience.
After Day 1 of their 2-day course, it was amazing to hear how after just 24 hours, these soldiers were able to regain function in joints that they were not able to fully utilize over the past 2 years! Learning the hardstyle lock, snapping with the hips and rewiring the body for full body tension, these soldiers were able to regain much of the strength they thought was lost due to old injuries.
At the end of the day, I was proud to have served and given Thanks back to the soldiers of the 1st Anglico company for keeping keeping our Country safe.

Hardstyle!
For a few years now, I've experienced lower back pains, shoulder pains and neck cramps. Never really knew the causes of it, I just knew that it sucked. After trying chiropractics, massages and even TENs electric therapy, it would be OK for a week or two but I would move the wrong way and the pain would come back. I decided to contact an old friend of my Sifu and started my path to rehabiliation with the use of kettlebells. What is it you ask, well if you've found my blog, take a look around and you'll educate yourself. During my first 6 months of training, I was able to eliminate my lower back pains, my shoulder and neck were perfectly mobile and best of all, I was getting physically stronger and increasing my flexibility at the same time! So I was presented the opportunity to take the Russian Kettlebell Challenge. After 3 days of intense training and examinations, I am proud to say I join the ranks of RKC!
Thus far, I feel kettlebell training has been the best thing that has happened to me to maintain my health and compliment my martial arts training. I currently share and teach the benefits of kettlebell exercise in Irvine, CA on Saturday mornings at 9am. Are you ready for the challenge?

2007 Austin Titling Event
We'll i'm glad to say that we survived yet another year of kung fu. I moved up to my Jao Gow Level III and I must say this year was the hardest I've trained and it paid off. No bloody noses or footprints on my body so i must say very successful year! We had a blast visiting the rest of the kung fu family in Austin and the rest of them from Tyler, TX came down as well. Learned some new things and met some new people.
The most exciting part of the Texas trip was finally visiting The Salt Lick. I've heard about this place for years...since my Belkin days but never had a chance to go. I'm not sure where it is exactly, somewhere on the outskirts of Austin. The cool thing about the place is it's BYOB so you'll see people lugging around cases and coolers full of alcohol. The coolest thing about the place is the all you can eat BBQ ribs, brisket and sausage! Wow...i never really knew how happy bbq makes me. I should move to Texas because the stuff out here in Cali aren't cutting it!
